I am almost completely sure that thebullet hell genre is one of the smaller niches from videogames, such is the case that I am also quite sure that most of those people that pour their lives boycotting most video game companies (spoiler: for salt reasons) don't even know that the genre exist in first place.

What is a bullet hell? This:
https://www.giantbomb.com/bullet-hell/3015-321/

Ikaruga for other side is quite a popular game, the game itself is a bullet hell but it includes an unique twist that makes it more different than the rest of "I spawned 7 seconds ago and I have already die again" games, but first the story of the game.

The story of Ikaruga is also quite symbolic according to some people.

"Several years prior, one of the most powerful men in the small island nation of Horai, Tenro Horai, discovered an incredible magical power deep within the ground that gave him god-like strength, the Ubusunagami Okinokai. Tenro and his followers used this power to conquer other nations. A rebel federation called Tenkaku emerged to challenge the Horai. They fought to free the world of Horai's conquests, but lost battle after battle. Eventually they were almost completely wiped out, except one young man survived named Shinra. Shinra set off to battle Horai again, but he was shot down and crashed in a remote village called Ikaruga. The village was inhabited by people exiled due to the Horai expansion. The village inhabitants saved Shinra from the plane wreckage and nursed him back to health. After healing, Shinra stated that he was still determined to continue the battle against Horai. The villagers entrusted him with a fighter plane they had built themselves called the Ikaruga, which was specially designed and hidden away in a secret underground location beneath the village. It was the first ship built to utilize and switch between two energy polarities, black and white."

Just for clarify there is not cutscenes or at least not with text, the story and such is something that came from the manual and other sources.

Lets pass to the gameplay:

The main gimmick of the game is the "polarity shield mechanic", this mechanic is easy to explain, your ship can change its polarity with a button, if you press the button your ship will change from white to black and if you press the button again the ship will change to white again.

The utility of this is gimmick is essential for the whole game, but what it is for? Just like your ship all enemies and bullets of the game will be either white or black, if your ship is hit by one bullet of the same color, your ship will absorb it and fill up a meter and if you press down other button it will release an auto aim attack to the closest enemies, this meter can get easily fulled but it can be used if there is at least a tad of energy accumulated.

But if your ship is hit by the opposite color this will burst off your ship and you will lose a life, lose a life is also possible if you crash against an enemy or obstacle no matter what color they are.

The final mechanic is the fact that if you attack an enemy with the opposite color your bullets will inflict the double of damage, pretty useful if you are trying to shoot down large enemies.

Just like that, the gameplay of Ikaruga is quite easy to understand and handle, of course if you want to master it it will take some time and playthroughs, though.

Finally you can make combo chains if you kill three enemies of the same color, if you kill an enemy of other color while connecting the chain it will break off.

Regarding other stuff, the graphics of the game will mostly show mechanical landscapes alongside the sky and some natural landscapes as background, there are a lot of different enemies designs and animations for attacks or sky gliding.

Other stuff like huge explosions of the color of the bullets is also fulfilling, they in fact are bright and clash in a pretty positive tone with the rest of the game.

Also I think the game does a good job with the use of the camera, sometimes you will lose the control of your ship and it will make you watch a transition of stage, the background is also animated and it done a good job feeling fast paced and natural, there are lots of details for most of the background objects!!

For add something extra to this rich dish, the game includes 5 stages and four of them includes different obstacles to sort but also the 5 stages includes unique enemies and bosses that will make you feel like the game is striving to keep the player interesed on the game.

Ikaruga features some voice acting using a voice synthesizer, it sounds like a robot, if you have seen quite a lot of tv shows featuring robots I think that you have listened this voice before.

Both soundtrack and artbook for Ikaruga is art, take a look to the artbooks if you can, I think you will agree that it is an effort of quality and discipline.

There are also some epic musical tracks that delivers.

Ikaruga has always been an acclaimed title, its gameplay is almost completely unique and simple to understand, alongside the cool music and art it feels impossible in my opinion to say something negative about the game, using my words and feelings: Ikaruga has never been underrated, has never been overrated, Ikaruga is in fact a master piece of the genre and videogames.

It took me 9 years to beat this game, I think I can check this and feel that I have achieved something else, also I think I have been more positive than neutral with this chocolate gift review, but what can I tell you...

Have you ever read someone saying "this game Ikaruga is not great", "this game Ikaruga is bad"? Of course not, Ikaruga is one of these games that has always been universal acclaimed by the public.

In fact, just play it, also I think Youtube comments are also scummy... maybe I should stop reading them and I should play more Ikaruga, that sounds like a good idea, isn't it?

I've almost beaten game once on dreamcast back in the day pretty sure i was close to the end, never managed get that far again, also despite having 3 copies off the gamecube version i never played it

I used to be heavy into shmups, but these days i don't really have the time or motivation to get good at one particulair game, same goes for fighters it just takes up so much time, time i wish i had.

- Answering to @Best1989

Have you played it on GCN or other console? The game offers 1 extra credit to spare per hour of gameplay, after 7 hours you unlock infinite continues, pretty neat.

- Answering to @BuraddoRun

Thank you, pal, also I think Ikaruga is pretty cheap on GCN and digital stores, Nicalis is doing a physical edition if I am not wrong.

- Answering to @kazumn

If I play the game with the mindset off I can barely beat stage 3, hence if I focus I am able to reach the final stage but that happened when I had 7 credits for spare off, when the player get the infinite credits is impossible not beat the game even on hard.

I guess the real challenge of the game is no miss attemps but I am not that good.

Congratulations for the three copies, I guess is the NTSC, PAL and JPN edition.

Thank you very much everyone for comment my review of Ikaruga.
